2008年3月11日，根據(jù)國務(wù)院機構(gòu)改革方案，國務(wù)院組建工業(yè)和信息化部，由李毅中任部長。將國家發(fā)改委工業(yè)行業(yè)管理有關(guān)職責，國防科工委會核電管理以外的職責，信息產(chǎn)業(yè)部和國信辦的職責，整合劃入該部；國家煙草專賣局與新組建國家國防科技工業(yè)局亦由工業(yè)和信息化部管理。2008年6月29日上午10時，工業(yè)和信息化部正式掛牌。
